Farming first began in Turkey and the Middle East by people using grasses and seeds to plant for the following year. Nowadays cereals which come from seeds make up much of the worlds food supply. In the early days many people lived by rivers which provided the water for the crops such as wheat, peas and barley. Once people began to plant and harvest crops, settlements began to grow and instead of moving from place to place to find their food they were able to stay in one place and so permanent settlements began to grow. It wasn't until about 1700 that farming began to change when an agricultural revolution led to the production of different crops such as corn and potatoes. In the 1850's new machinery increased production rates and having steam power and later gas powered engines made it possible to produce much more crop. Farming was very dependant upon horses and oxen to plough the fields but once farmers started to use tractors, threshing machines and combine harvesters the sight of horses pulling the ploughs soon disappeared and today farming is completely different to what it used to be. Over the years man has invented new machines and techniques to increase the amount and variety of crop production. Cattle can still be seen in many fields belonging to a farm and many farms sell their dairy produce to the supermarkets. Some farms even have their own little shop with beef, pork and lamb for sale as well as milk, butter and cheese.
